Chapter 7

Snow crunched under my feet as we left the club and headed to the Christmas tree lot. “What should I get Axel for Christmas?”

“Nothing,” Wiggles said, “because you’re not really dating him.”

I slowed. “Wiggles, I know this is hard for you. Don’t be jealous. You’ll always be my number one guy. But don’t you want to see me happy?”

He didn’t slow down. “You were happy with Rhett. I don’t mind him. Keep your head in the game. Magic is making you feel this way. Your feelings for Axel aren’t real. Just keep saying that to yourself.”

I pressed a hand against my heart. It felt real to me. “He’s really into his clothes. Maybe I should get him a new shirt or some cufflinks.”

Wiggles shook his head and stomped ahead. “You’re impossible.”

I grinned. I’d figure out the perfect gift for Axel to make his Christmas sparkle.

I caught up with Wiggles, and we headed into the tree lot. Tate was busy with customers, and Lowther was unpacking several large trees and putting them out on display.

“That’s our guy,” Wiggles said. “He’s the one behind this insanity.”

“Don’t accuse him of anything. It’s just a theory. Lowther’s a good guy. Everyone likes him.”

“Especially the women,” Wiggles said. “I got barely any belly rubs at the longest night celebration because all the women were fawning over Lowther. That’s not natural. Everyone loves giving me a belly rub.”

“Lowther does have a certain appeal,” I said. “Even I felt drawn to him, and he’s not my usual type.”

“He’s decided Axel is your type. This guy has a problem.”

I sighed and smiled. “Axel is so my type.”

Wiggles growled. “You keep doing that soppy sighing, and I’ll bite you again.”

“Fine. Let’s talk to Lowther. We’ll see if he knows anything about what’s going on. But you’re making a mistake about this.”

Lowther smiled as we approached. “Hi. Are you back for another tree? There’s not a problem with the one in the cemetery?”

“No, it’s the perfect tree. It did us proud,” I said.

“We want to know what you’ve done to everyone.” Wiggles head-butted Lowther’s leg. “You’ve made Tempest fall in love with Axel. It’s disgusting.”

Lowther stared down at Wiggles as he rubbed his calf. “What are you talking about?”

I shook my head. “Wiggles thinks something strange is going on. I’ve recently fallen in love, and—”

“Let me set out the facts, rather than your illusion,” Wiggles said. “First off, Tempest loves Rhett. They’ve been together for ages.”

“I’m happy to hear that,” Lowther said, his expression puzzled. “It’s nice when people find their soulmate.”

“Sure. Everything was fine until you showed up,” Wiggles said. “Suddenly, Tempest is obsessing over Axel, who is a sleazy half-demon she wouldn’t look twice at, unless she’s under a dark curse or a twisted magic spell. What do you know about that?”

Lowther blinked several times. “Well, nothing.”

“Try again.” Wiggles bared his teeth.

“Steady now,” I said. “Lowther, you’re a fallen cupid. Did you try some magic last night, and it misfired?”

He froze on the spot and gulped. “Who told you I was a fallen cupid?”

“Dazielle.
